Back in 2003, I had the absolute privilege of meeting a young boy called Sebastian Gates. Throughout his struggle with cancer, he dreamt of somewhere beautiful in the countryside where seriously ill children could spend special time with their parents and loved ones.
That dream became a reality two weeks ago, when the Bluebells opened its doors in Hampshire and I am thrilled. The first purpose-built holiday home in the country, Sebastian’s family have battled to build the Bluebells since 2003 and so it is not surprising that around 250 people turned up to opening.
Although, due to Parliamentary business on the day, I was unable to attend the official opening, I want to thank all those involved who helped make Sebastian’s dream a reality. Having been involved with the Trust for some time, and as a recent Patron, I know firsthand the hard work and dedication that has gone into this project.
I will never forget Sebastian and neither will the children who stay at Bluebells with their families in the years to come.
